It all started with a vision - a vision of waves of young people who hit the shores of every country, every continent of the world with the message of Christ. Over 40 years later, Youth With A Mission, under the leadership of our founder Loren Cunningham, has now become a mission organization with over 17,000 full time volunteer staff, serving over 700 locations in more than 135 countries. Our mandate and motto is "To know God and to make Him known."

YWAM's waves hit the shores of the Philippines more than 30 years ago. One crest of those present-day waves is the Mobile Discipleship Ministry. In 1993, Doug Sharpe and family, together with the Mobile Discipleship Team set out to pioneer a training center in Talisay City, Cebu. From the very first day when they set foot on the property in Carmen Village, Talisay City, it has been an adventure of faith!

The MDM Base was established on the foundations of worship and intercession, creating a lifestyle that continues to this very day.  It is during these times of seeking the Lord's face, that the Lord speaks and challenges the staff and leaders to cooperate with Him and His work. Base ministry opportunities and expansion and growth have all been birthed during these times.

Even before the Mobile Discipleship Team left Manila for Cebu, the Lord was at work to lead them into their inheritance. Upon finding the property in Carmen Village, the team entered into a rental contract with an option to purchase after three years. Nothing in the team’s bank account indicated that this could be a remote possibility but they had God's word. There were times when their faith wavered but a strong admonition from the Lord to "obey or miss His blessing" encouraged them to keep believing that what the Lord has promised would surely come to pass.

One month prior to the deadline, the team had less than 30% of the purchase price. Every day, miracles were seen as the Lord slowly brought in the finances. On July 3, 1996, exactly three years to the day when the team moved into the property on 3rd St., the leaders were able to sign a deed of sale and present the full amount of PhP2.4 million in purchase of the property. A small feat for the Lord but a large investment of faith for the team!

Even prior to the purchase of the property, developments were already started to accommodate the staff and students for the various base ministries. With expanding training programs and ministries, there was need for more classroom and staff quarters. With a gift of $1,000US from friends in Ireland, the team was once again challenged to put their faith to a test. With this seed money, the first phase of the building project began in January, 1999 and by August of the same year, the first floor was completed. In 2000, a building team from the YWAM Island Mercy Ship chose Cebu for their outreach location. It was God’s go signal to start building again. With less money in the bank than when the team started the first floor, they went ahead in faith to build the second and third floors. The second floor which has quarters for long-term staff and a guest room was completed in June, 2001. The third floor was finished and dedicated on November 2003, culminating over four years of step-by-step obedience and faith.

Every year since 1995, the Discipleship Training School (DTS) has been offered. DTS is the entry level course of YWAM which emphasizes character development and our relationship with God, others and the world. From 1998 until 2002, the Crossroads DTS (CDTS) was offered. The CDTS is designed for families and older singles. Outreach teams from these schools have reached various areas in the Philippines as well as various nations throughout Asia.

In 1996, the Professional Discipleship Training Course (PDTC) was started. PDTC is like a mini-DTS, designed for professionals. The School of Intercession, Worship and Spiritual Warfare was offered in 1999-2000. In 1998 a course on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) was offered.

In October of 2003, the first School of Frontier Missions (SOFM) was offered, in line with the focus to reach the unreached. Short courses offered during summer include the Discipliship Training Week, School of Worship and Kiddie Camps. A Christmas Camp under the King’s Kids Ministry of the base was also first held in December 1999.

The base is able to host local and international outreach teams as well as King's Kids Camps. Teams from different YWAM bases in the Philippines as well as from Singapore, Papua New Guinea, South Korea and Australia, among others, have done their outreach here in Cebu.

In 1998, Paglaum Student Center in Tagbilaran City, Bohol was opened in cooperation with People-to-People Ministry and Reach and Teach Ministry. This center has helped students find Christ as they came daily for coffee, merienda or to pour out their hearts to a listening staff.

The Kid’s Club, our ministry to the poor children in the Talisay area, opened many doors for us. Through the Kid’s Club, the parents, especially mothers, are also reached out. The Seeds of Promise Learning Center, a pre-school reaching the children of low-income families in Talisay City, was started in 2001 through a student sponsorship program.

In May of 2003, YWAM opened its doors in Calbayog, Samar. A product of intercession and outreach team ministry, the pioneering team is already making an impact in that city.

The Missionary Care team made their home in our region after conducting a Missionary Care Workshop.
Jail and campus ministries are also on-going, as well as partnership with different churches and Christian organizations.

Many faces, many lives, and many hearts touched by the gospel of Christ. Many changes, many challenges but one faithful God whose promises are true! As one surveys all that the Lord has done in 19 years, one can only stand in awe and wonder—truly our history, is His Story!
